Jeff and I have been enjoying the warmer spring days to explore new places and take Peppermint the basset hound for fun walks. We were thrilled to discover that the Nelimark Museum, right up the road from the B&B not only has fun outbuildings to explore, but also features an amazing walking path!
Visitors to the B&B can visit the Nelimark, which is just a mile or two up the road. During the season (June through the fall) visitors can tour the historic Finnish farmhouse, where there are bits of history, antiques and artisan crafts and baked goods on display. Stop by for a cup of coffee or catch up with our friendly neighbors and then head out for a hike and a picnic lunch.
The hiking path is two and a half miles that winds through tall pines along the Embarrass river and next to a picturesque small lake. Part of the path passes through the Heritage Park Campground with an exercise/obstacle route through the forest. After the campground the trail passes by the Pyhala historic homestead, the river and a non-paved path called the Metsa Lenki Woods Loop, a trail that winds through the forest. The path is a bit hilly, but since it’s paved, it’s a very easy walk. Jeff and I were so pleasantly surprised to find such an amazing resource so close to the farm.
There is a small picnic area next to a bend in the Embarrass river at the halfway point with a few picnic tables and fire rings, so it’s a perfect place to plan on a lovely outdoor lunch. Ask us about arranging a picnic basket for you! If you’re looking for something a little more secluded, hold out for the perfect lookout over the little lake along the way. There’s a small bench placed perfectly to enjoy the view.
Once back at Nelimark, don’t forget to check out the Finnish sauna and other outbuildings, perfect examples of Finnish log construction and outfitted with vintage antique housewares that will make you feel as if you’ve stepped back in time.
In all, we’re thrilled to have found such a lovely place to enjoy the beautiful forest so close to the farm. We know our guests who are looking for a relaxing walk through the woods and slow-paced stay at the B&B will love it too!
We took plenty of pictures, of course.
